The Marble Falls High School baseball team lost to Lampasas 6-0 March 26 in the second round of District 24-4A play.
The Badgers led 3-0 in the first inning thanks to a double.
“It was a rough three runs,” Mustangs head coach Tyler Porter said. “It wasn’t walks or errors. It was soft hits. You feel like you stole money. They hit a ball that got by our outfielder, and they scored three runs.”
Lampasas added a run in the fourth and two in the fifth. Five of their runs were earned.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Mustangs (8-10, 0-6) had bases loaded with one out when Lampasas made a pitching change. The new pitcher began with a strikeout and forced the next batter to hit into a groundout.
Lampasas got out of the inning without yielding a run.
It was the second time in the contest the Mustangs had at least two runners on base with no more than one out.
The challenges at the plate, Porter said, come back to learning how to bat on the varsity level, which includes being disciplined to not chase bad pitches and forcing pitchers to go deeper into the pitch count.
“The strikeouts — part of it is youth,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Mustangs also are still learning the value of getting the give-me outs: balls batted up high enough, no matter where they begin to drop, to allow them to run over and make the catch for the out. Porter noted it’s not enough to get there in time. The Mustangs now must be able to make the catch and squeeze their glove around the ball for the out.
“I thought some should have been caught,” he said. “They’re plays we should make that are unofficial errors.”
Marble Falls completes the series against the Badgers at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 28, in Lampasas.
